This shirt is made from a vintage quilt, circa 1900s-1920s. Red-and-white quilts were popular from the 1880s through the early 20th century, likely because red dye was one of the more colorfast dyes—it didn't fade or run like many other dyes of the period. Hand-mending throughout.
